This is an 4 evening (total 8 hours) introductory course to Spencerian Script - a historical style that was developed in America in the 1840's by Platt Roger Spencer. Studying Spencerian helps to improve your overall handwriting, its elegant and graceful style can be used for daily correspondences - from stationery designs, wedding invitations and much more.This course is tailored for complete beginners or calligraphers of any level to finesse their dip pen calligraphy skills.

Your instructor, Kalo is the first pen lady in Hong Kong to be awarded the Certificate of Proficiency and the Certificate of Excellence in Spencerian Script by the IAMPETH (International Association of Master Penmen, Engrossers, and Teachers of Handwriting.)

• 4 + 11 + 18 + 25 OCT (WED) 2023 | 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM

[ Info ]
Level: BEGINNER to IMPROVER - no experience in calligraphy
Venue: 18-20 Wyndham Street, Central (5 mins walk from the MTR)
Language: English only

[ Workshop Fee ]
• FOR 1 SEAT: $2,200 (4 lessons)
• FOR 2 SEATS: $4,200 (4 lessons - save $200)
• Including 1 custom folder with your name calligraphy; all handouts and copysheets.

[ Material Fee ]
KMA Calligraphy Starter Kit: HK$350 per box set OR you can BRING YOUR TOOL (a penholder and a pointed nib) at no extra cost.

[ Course Curriculum ]
The course focuses on technical exercises to achieve consistency in sizes, forms and structure. You will also receive constructive feedback for your homework to further improve their skills.

  1. History of Spencerian Script
  2. Table Set Up
  3. Posture and Pen Grip
  4. Warm Up Exercises
  5. Principle Strokes
  6. Minuscules (lowercase)

 DAY 2

  1. Use of Tools - Penholder + Nibs
  2. Nib Manipulation 
  3. Minuscules (lowercase)
  4. Ligature (Letter Connections)

 DAY 3

  1. Use of Tools - Inks
  2. Concepts of Movement
  3. Principle Strokes
  4. Majuscules (uppercase)

 DAY 4

  1. Use of Tools - Paper
  2. Pressure for Shading + Hairline
  3. Majuscules (uppercase)
  4. Appreciation of Historical Writing - original pieces from the 1800s will be presented for study
  5. Tricks + Tips
